Mama Jaz Festival 2018 - Artists

Inner Dimensions - April 1st

For the current generation of South African young jazz musicians, pianist, and composer, Nduduzo Makhathini stands as a key torchbearer. It’s useful to note the refreshing virtuosity with which the 34-year old jazzman articulates a spiritual vision of the world with the piano, and his compositional clarity. Makhathini plays with a bright lyricism and a full sound pallet that gives him a markedly wide melodic vocabulary. His music is as open as it is invigorating.

NduduzoMakhathini - Piano / Ayanda Sikade - Drums / Fabien Iannone - Bass / Domenic Landolf - Saxophone / Nomagugu Makhathini - Voice / Anna Widauer - Voice / Xolani Sithole - Voice

The humble master of the Mauritian Jazz Guitar and outstanding creative composer, will be present on the 8th of April to demonstrate, with his seasoned sidekicks, the original nature of their lives.

Dean Nookadu Quartet - April 15th

On the 15th of April, get ready to be amazed by the Dean Nookadu Quartet. From high octaves to poetry and lyrical mastery, their music was born from a classical mind evolved to new frontiers of Mauritian sound all while remaining down to earth but not mundane. Their music walks a line of neither safe nor insane.

Dean Nookadu - Piano / Nel Bucktowar - Saxophone & Flute / Denis Serret - Bass / Fabrice Ramalingum - Drums

Rare creative talents with sincere and humble hearts as servants of their original compositions for an unprecedented musical invocation; an unexpected horizon in a familiar sky.

Philippe Thomas Quintet - April 29th

A Berklee Summa Cum Laude returned to the country to explore the musical tradition, bringing back 20 years of research in the form of transcendental compositions performed by three generations in quintet: an exquisite cherry for the last great concert of the Month of Jazz.

Philippe Thomas - Trumpet / Samuel Laval - Saxophone / Samuel Saide - Piano / KersleyPytambar - Bass / Christophe Bertin - Drums
