Ferney La Vallée is a nature reserve of 200 hectares that aims to preserve the unique biodiversity of the native forest of Mauritius. The Nature Reserve is home to more than 15,000 endemic plants and approximately 200 endemic birds reintroduced, including endangered species such as the Pink Pigeon, the Kestrel, the Echo Parakeet, the Flycatcher and the Cuckooshrike.

While exploring the nature reserve to encounter the kestrels, you will get to admire endemic trees like the Latania Loddigesii (Latanier bleu or Latanier de l'île Ronde), a unique species of the palm tree along with other endemic plants. You will also have the amazing opportunity of feeding the Mauritius kestrel, the only falcon species living on the island.

For lunch, you will head to the Ferney Falaise Rouge restaurant, located 2 minutes away from Ferney La Vallée. Enjoy a delicious 3-course meal by sampling a selection of delectable dishes including local produce such as venison, chicken and fish. About Ferney La Vallée

Ferney La Vallée houses a coffee plantation, a museum and one of the few nature sanctuaries on the island. It provides a much-needed haven to a wide variety of indigenous species, many of which are rare or threatened. Exploring Ferney La Vallée means more than a simple hike; it provides an unforgettable experience in a unique place, where the pleasures of hiking are associated with environmental protection. Furthermore, by visiting Ferney La Vallée, you are actively contributing to the noble cause of preserving the biodiversity of Mauritius.

Mauritius Kestrel

This magnificent bird of prey is easily identified by its creamy white chest with dark markings and its chestnut brown head, neck and feathers bearing black markings. In the early 1970s, the Mauritius kestrel seemed to be verge of extinction with a population of only 4 to 6 members on the island. This alarming situation prompted extreme measures to be taken to preserve the species and foster appropriate breeding conditions for it.

The Mauritius kestrel conservation program focused mainly on increasing the population of the species itself and it was ultimately successful. Since the conservation program, the population of the Mauritius kestrel has continued to increase steadily with an estimate of 800 to 1,000 individuals currently living in our endemic forests.
