Ebony Forest Discovery Tour - Package Inclusions:

Reservation

  • Reservation required 48 hours in advance by phone & subject to availability.
  • You are kindly requested to call us on 269-1500 to confirm availability before proceeding with the booking.
  • Mauritian ID card or Resident permit must be shown.
  • The Management of Ebony reserves the right to suspend or cancel any activity or close the Park, for the safety and security of its visitors and proper running of the Park, where there is adverse weather, power failure, equipment failure, maintenance and/or construction.
  • Failure to adhere to the rules and regulations of the property can result in expulsion from the premises.

Note

  • All visitors will have to wear a mask and they will have their temperature taken at the entrance. If a visitor's temperature is 37.8 degrees or more, they will be isolated in the First aid room and will be reported as per prevailing legislation in Mauritius.
  • Social distancing will be respected in the museum.
  • Raised walkway guided visit will be done with social distancing and a maximum of 15 persons will be accepted if the group constitutes of different group of people.
  • The onsite restaurant is closed on Sundays & Public Holidays. However the viewpoint snack will remain functional.

About the Activity - Ebony Forest Discovery Tour

If you have ever wondered where the Dodo lived or what Mauritius looked like before the arrival of humans, then visit Ebony Forest.


Immerse yourself in the mountains and greenery of Chamarel, home to some of the most endangered species in the World. With 2 options of different duration, this package is suitable for all age groups so you can come with your family, friends, children or partner.

What to Expect?

Ebony Forest Discovery Tour - The Experience:

  • Encounter some of the rarest plants in Mauritius, see ebony trees and meet the local fauna of Mauritius during your Discovery Tour of Ebony Forest.

  • A guide will accompany you on the Flycatcher Raised Walkway of 300m. On this 30-minute guided tour, you will feel the presence of ebony trees and understand why it is one of the most valuable woods in the world.

  • See Fruit Bats hanging in the trees or eating fruits, endemic Phelsuma geckos sunbathing, pic pic birds hopping around the canopy looking for insects and one of the rarest trees in the world, the bois corail or Coral Tree, named for its magnificent coral-shaped flowers.

  • Breathe in the sweet scents of the fresh and cool forest air and learn about why palms, once common in Mauritian forests, are now missing from most remnant native forests.

  • If you are a keen bird watcher, you will be able to spot endemic birds that the Ebony Forest hosts, such as the Mauritius Paradise Flycatcher, Mauritian Black Bulbul and grey-white eyes.

  • The Sublime Point trail offers a breathtaking view of Le Morne Brabant and the surrounding bays where you can also see a lot of tropical birds. An elevated footbridge leads you to the heart of the habitat with geckos, birds and other endemic species.

  • For more fun and exploration, you can choose to hike by yourself along the Piton Canot trails which offer breathtaking panoramic views of the south-west of Mauritius.

  • Embark on a history trip at the reserve’s museum which will take you on a journey to over 8 million years ago. You will discover the unique animals and plants that once lived here and the destructive impact that humans have had in the last 400 years.

  • Visit the native plant nursery, situated at the Visitor Centre, which is the only nursery in Mauritius dedicated to propagating only native and endemic species. It specialises in growing species from coastal to upland areas, including rare and threatened species.

  • It is forbidden to bring any illegal substances, alcohol, firearms and/or generally any other object which is likely to be offensive, dangerous and/or is illegal.
  • It is forbidden to disturb or harass the animals and tranquillity of Ebony i.e, by musical instruments, audio equipment, screaming, shouting etc.
  • It is forbidden and a criminal offence to remove from Ebony, any animal, plant, part of the landscape and/or any other structure and/or to damage or deface any of the aforesaid.
  • It is forbidden for any visitors to picnic, climb stone walls or trees, or litter.

  • Ebony Forest Reserve is a natural site and hence there are risks from falling branches and steep slopes. It also undergoes active forestry activities. Please pay attention.
